Paul Nyathi|The opposition MDC has confirmed that its leader Nelson Chamisa will be meeting with former President Robert Mugabe in the next few days.
Speaking on Voice Of America’s Studio 7 on Sunday evening, MDC national spokesperson Jacob Mafume said that Chamisa will be meeting with Mugabe at his Blue Roof residence without giving specific issues that the two will discuss.
“Indeed Chamisa will be meeting with Mugabe anytime within the next few days,” said Mafume.
“There are a lot of issues that Chamisa will want to hear from Mugabe bearing in mind that Mugabe led this country for over 30 years.”
“It doesn’t mean that because Mugabe was bad there is nothing positive that can be drawn from him with the huge political experience he has,” added Mafume.
Mafume however quickly dispelled information that Mugabe was funding Chamisa ahead of the party congress set for May this year.
“That’s not true at all,” he said. “Chamisa has never benefited finacially from Mugabe in any way. It is the same ZANU PF leaders who are accusing Chamisa who have benefited a lot from Mugabe who they participated in corrupt activities together for thirty years.”
Mafume said the MDC has never approached Mugabe for any support but Mugabe volunteered on his own will to support the MDC and vote for Chamisa.
“It is not the business of our leader to go around choosing supporters but its the supporters who choose our leader on realising that he has the capability of taking the country forward.”
News through the week has been that Chamisa has been receiving financial support from the former President in order to fund his campaign against Douglas Mwonzora who is also accused of being funded by President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
